Energy and Sustainability Assessments for the Built Environment
The Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) provoked change to the way our country utilises home energy and commercial building energy. The directive declares that approximately 40% of the energy used in the UK is done so in buildings. The EPBD is therefore focused on reducing the energy consumption of buildings to ensure that the carbon emission rate of buildings is lowered by a considerable extent.
In relation to architectural achievement the effect of the EPBD has been to idealise the building process. Building design is now conducted in relation to the orientation utilising sun light for well being and warmth, with better insulation levels, increased energy efficient fixed building services, better material specification and the use of renewable energy.
Sustaining the environment so that future generations can enjoy our world is a prioritised governmental concern. Social and affordable housing has to be built to Level 3 of the Code for Sustainable Homes CfSH and many developments now have to reach a certain level of the CfSH as a planning condition.
Energy and environmental sustainability have become paramount concerns for each and every borough council. The "Merton Rule" has now been incorporated by the majority of borough councils meaning that planning applications have to have a certain percentage of the developments energy provided by a renewable energy form.
